What generative engine optimization means
Generative Engine Optimization, commonly shortened to GEO, is the practice of improving the clarity, structure, evidence and machine readability of web content for generative AI systems. GEO is related to SEO, but it is not identical. Traditional SEO often centers on ranked search results. GEO also considers whether an answer system can extract reliable facts, connect those facts to a real entity and assemble a useful response.
The five foundations
1. Access
Important public pages should be reachable, indexable and represented in a valid sitemap. Blocking crawlers indiscriminately can reduce discoverability.
2. Comprehension
A page should say exactly who the company is, what it provides, who it helps and where it operates. Clever language cannot replace factual clarity.
3. Entity confidence
Names, locations, products, leadership and relationships should remain consistent across visible copy, structured data and trusted external references.
4. Evidence
Claims become more useful when supported by specific examples, credentials, policies, methods, customer evidence or independently verifiable sources.
5. Answer coverage
Strong sites answer the actual questions buyers ask: fit, process, price, risks, alternatives, timing, requirements and outcomes.
What GEO cannot guarantee
No website change can guarantee that an independent AI platform will rank, cite or recommend a business. Models, indexes and retrieval systems change. GEO improves the quality of the available signals; it does not control the final answer.
